Recent theoretical and empirical developments have led to a deeper understanding of the complexity of career decisions and the cognitive processes that underpin them, and numerous techniques have been developed aimed at supporting clients struggling with
this complexity. This article introduces a number of evidence-based techniques available to career practitioners, examining the theories which underpin them and the evidence for their effectiveness within career practice. The paper offers a framework of
techniques and describes a number of tools which have been shown to add value to career conversations.
